Last week we visited Saporito – just a couple of minutes walk from Marylebone Station and Baker Street on Melcombe Street, NW1.

The menu is not extensive, but what we experienced was excellent.

First the ham and mushroom pizza – it felt authentically homemade – they can also be be ordered to take away if you live nearby! The pesto tagliatelle was fresh, flavoursome and particularly tasty, along with a side of fried Zucchini. We had room just to split a tiramisu –  it was only lunchtime! Their coffee is great and also available to take away – a literally refreshing alternative to the nearby chains.

Saporito Marylebone

The interior is beautifully done – clean, modern, and sleek and the vibe relaxed without being quiet.

The lovely, very attentive staff seemed to have a rapport with some of the customers who, obviously impressed by Saporito, frequent it. Amongst the clientele were business women and men, students, and couples of various ages – the full range of which is rarely in one restaurant at once, even in London. All in all, we were very impressed, and it appears that everyone else is equally charmed by Saporito and its delicious food.

An absolute definite for those looking for a lunchtime break from work and an authentic Italian experience.

Founded in 2005, the ethos behind Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair is a simple, like the clothes they sell, virtually unique.

Exasperated with rising high street prices, it offers the chance to buy genuine pieces of the past without the extortionately inflated price tags that have become synonymous with the vintage tag in the past few years. Having attended one of their events last year, I can vouch for this.

Theirs is a vast and impressive stock spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s featuring fashion to furniture and accessories to antiques, hence why it has proved such a popular market, and featured on Dawn O’Porter’s TV show ‘This Old Thing’.

Their return to London will prove a highlight given the city’s prevailing vintage scene, which will allow shoppers the opportunity to buy without breaking the bank.

The opening of the hotly anticipated permanent pop-up venue Carousel welcomes the arrival of a new dimension to London dining. As the name suggests, it offers a mouthwatering merry-go-round of food, but exhibits something far beyond just that.

The plan is an ambitious one – to not only change the menus, but the entire flavour of the restaurant in terms of design, music and performance every month.

Carousel it not just a fun-fair of fabulous food, but rather an event space which will play host to anything fun – plays, book launches, screenings, exhibitions, fashion shows and beyond. There is scope for everything thanks to professional lighting set up and a versatile layout; a vast basement, a bright and open ground floor, and a great-glass-elevator style upper level with floor-to-ceiling-windows on three sides.

What Carousel offers above anyone else in a capital where a Michelin star is almost a commodity, is three different, multi-sensory, no-holds barred experiences each month. Each floor is a showcase; both a circus for normal customers and a blank canvas for Londoners who wish to hire the venue who, with the Carousel team, have the power to make it completely their own.

Carousel is more that just a permanent pop-up space – the plan is to stay around for five years, and given Shuttlecock Inc.’s sky-high success at ‘Mile High’ it seems that this ‘pop-up’ could well throw longevity into its multifarious mix.

As a masterclass in creativity, innovation, imagination, and storytelling, we look forward to watching Carousel’s chapters unfold.

Last week I lost my tea virginity. To an Earl. Until this point, I had never had a proper cup of tea, only the fruity or herbal stuff. Nothing had prepared me for the peppery, orange perfumes of Pantry at 108’s Early Grey Tea which enticed me to have a sip. It is such a delight, that there is no need to have champagne with the Afternoon Tea. As a baker myself, it is always nice to sample a professional Afternoon Tea, and the array at the newly opened chic all day dining space Pantry at 108 Marylebone Lane (at The Marylebone Hotel) does not disappoint.

pantry1

The show put on at Pantry is of great variety, and they have revived the usual, somewhat limited Afternoon Tea repertoire. There are six teas to choose from, four sandwiches, two lentil based amuse-bouches, jelly, scones, macaroons, brownies, and cakes, which inject a modern flavor to the traditional afternoon tea. Make sure to request the orange macaroons.

The scones are pleasantly light, and cream not clotted enough to feel like a coronary in a mouthful. Of all the Afternoon Teas I have sampled (of which there are many) this is the first which hasn’t left me feeling unpleasantly full, though this doesn’t mean it lacks flavour or volume.

There is also a gluten free, lower sugar and low dairy menu, and Pantry will cater to any dietary requirements that you have – a feat which is disappointingly missing from the majority of Afternoon Tea outlets. Whilst we had the ‘Classic’ tea menu, there is also Deluxe, but the Classic was easily luxe enough for us.

pantry3What pleasantly surprised me about the experience was the lack of pretentiousness; the clientele are made up of hotel guests and visitors who were quiet and far from flashy, and where Pantry really wins is the ambience. The Tea Room is very spacious; there is more than enough room between the tables to give you both intimacy and privacy, and it is flooded with natural light. The staff are a delight, and unlike in Fortnum and Mason, you can’t hear every word of the Americans’ conversation next to you, nor are you made to feel as if you must rush the experience in order to get the next customers in. No request is an inconvenience to a team that are clearly proud and passionate about their work.

The afternoon tea here is a wonderful way to simply take a few hours off from the world. We left rejuvenated and with revived taste buds. Thank goodness we didn’t have lunch, but I could easily be swayed by 108 Marylebone Lane’s dinner menu, and I am going to visit The Juicery this week (open from 7a.m.) for a breakfast smoothie.
