Founder of Marylebone’s Man Made barbers, Dan Gregory beat off razor sharp competition from 14 other barbers to be named the best barber in London.

Dan Gregory, 30, is based at the luxurious Man Made on Marylebone’s George Street, picked up the award after winning the regional final, held at Envy Barbers in Covent Garden on March 29.

As well as winning the coveted regional title, Dan will now go on to compete in the national final against seven other top barbers from across the country at this year’s Barber UK. The two-day barber show takes place at the Birmingham NEC on 21st and 22nd May, and promises to be a bigger and better celebration of British barbering than ever before.

Dan has come a long way since his early days in the industry.

He explained: “I fell into barbering after going for a haircut. The barber was looking for a Saturday boy so I applied and the rest is history. To be crowned the best wet shaving barber in London is a huge achievement and something I’m proud to shout about. But I want to go one step further and win the national final. I can’t wait to get into that boxing ring and show off my skills.”

London Fashion Week is in full swing, so to celebrate ‘Love Your Clothes’ along with Barnardos and Charity Fashion Live are holding free workshops so savvy Londoners can learn how to stay on top of the latest trends whilst sticking to a budget.

‘Love your clothes’ are experts in up-cycling and the customisation of clothes. They’re experts in making fashion more sustainable and aiming to get rid of ‘fast fashion’. UK consumers spend £44 billion per year on clothes, whilst a third of our clothes haven’t been worn in the last year, so sustainability is fast becoming a hot-topic in the fashion sphere.

The workshops are drop-in events that will show attendees tips and tricks when it comes to sewing and customisation. The aim is to show how easy sustainable fashion can be.

The first of the three workshops will be held in Marylebone’s Barnados store on the 25th of February. It will focus on how to be audacious with clothes. Expect to learn how to make make bows, pom-poms and using vintage haberdashery to customise your clothes. With over 30 stores in London, all Londoners have the opportunity to go to their local Barnardos and get a bargain whilst helping make a difference.

Workshops will also be held on the 4th March in Brixton and the 11th of March in Crouch End.

Two Marylebone barbers have made it to the shortlist of a nationwide competition to be crowned the best wet shaving barber in Great Britain.

Dan Gregory, 30 and Joe Easton, 22, both based at Man Made in George Street, will face razor sharp competition from fellow craftsmen near and far in their quest to win the prestigious competition.

Dan and Joe are set to face-off against other top barbers in the London regional final in March. If they’re successful enough to secure a top spot in the regional heat, Dan and Joe will face the most crucial shave of their life at the national final, which will take place inside a boxing ring at Barber UK at the Birmingham NEC on May 21, 2017.

Dan has come a long way since his early days in the industry. He explained: “I fell into barbering after going for a haircut. The barber was looking for a Saturday boy so I applied and the rest is history.”

Joe is a fresher face to the industry, adding: “I fell in love with the art of barbering. Especially shaving, the process of shaving is therapeutic not only for our clients, but for us barbers too!”

Now in its fourth year, the annual competition, run by premium male grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge and industry watchdogs the British Barbers’ Association, is fast becoming the competition of the barbering industry.

London favourite and Marylebone staple, Sushi Shop, have unveiled a new collaborative menu for 2017.

The restaurant has teamed up with Michelin star chef, Kei Kobayashi, in a collaboration that they call ‘the perfect meeting of East and West’. From the salmon gravlax roll to the red miso cucumber salad, this new menu has clear echoes of french gastronomic cuisine whilst still retaining the aesthetic appeal and creativity that Japanese dishes are famous for.

Both Sushi Shop and Kei Kobayashi have French and Japanese cultures at the centre of their history. Sushi Shop was founded by two french entrepreneurs in 1998, who saw the gap for a middle of the market Sushi restaurant. A restaurant that would offer tasty, made to order sushi that was encouraged to take away, all at a reasonable price. No one else was offering this at the time, sushi was mainly found in expensive hotels and restaurants and at a high price point. Kobayashi on the other hand was born and raised in Nagano, Japan. This is where he began cooking french cuisine before moving to France in the mid 90s to learn how to master and a perfect his skill. In 2011 Kobayashi opened his own restaurant, KEI, in Paris. One year after the opening he was awarded a Michelin star.

Inspired by their joint history, Kobayashi and Sushi Shop have collaborated to try and create a fusion of the two cuisines, and its worked.

A highlight of the new menu is the gyu special roll, gyu meaning beef in Japanese. Here Kobayashi has reworked the beef and presented it in a carpaccio style, ever-so lightly seared and lacquered with teriyaki sauce. The crunch from the peppers, carrots and fried onions provide a nice contrast to the soft and succulent beef. Kobayashi said, “I wanted to play with colours, this is a very very visual creation, very expressive.”

At £8.90 for the gyu special roll, Sushi Shop is not far off high-street competitors in terms of price. However, they are miles ahead in terms of quality. At Sushi Shop the ingredients are fresh and so are the dishes, all food is made to order. Which is a nice change to other high-street sushi chains where the food is pre-packaged and left to dry out in a self-service refrigerator.

Kobayashi and Sushi Shop have achieved what they wanted here. The new menu is simple yet intricate, traditional yet innovative, Japanese yet French. They have succeeded in fusing the two cuisines and have created a fresh and exciting new menu.

Oxford Street hotspot, Chi Kitchen’s, has announced a January exclusive ‘Tai Chi’ inspired menu to celebrate the new year.

The new menu will be available from the 2nd – 22nd of January and offers a myriad of healthy, pan-asian dishes such as; a chicken and Chinese herb soup, Quinoa Salad and a tuna and avocado tempura sushi roll.

Ping Coombs, the winner of MasterChef 2014, and the Executive Chef at Chi Kitchen’s has created the new exclusive menu to embrace a harmonised balance, which is in line with the philosophy of ‘Tai Chi’. Although ‘Tai Chi’ was originally a Chinese martial art, today it is used to promote good health and well being. The philosophy of ‘Tai Chi’ is simple yet powerful – ‘to be balanced’. This is exactly what Coombs and her kitchen have tried to achieve with this menu. It provides a healthy alternative, as well as plates that will appeal to our more indulgent sides. Dishes such as the chicken and Chinese herb soup are made with healthy, super-food ingredients. Whereas the tuna and avocado sushi roll, which you can choose to have deep-fried, is there to self indulge.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Chis’s Kitchen is the perfect alternative whenever you feel a little peckish hunting for those January sales.

Renowned vegetarian and vegan restaurant, The Gate, opened its latest branch on Marylebone’s Seymour Place last month.

With successful branches already open in both Islington and Hammersmith, its obvious this veggie hotspot has made a new and innovative addition to the Central London food scene.

The Gate is famous for making veggies the centre piece of their innovative cooking. With dishes such as; aubergine schnitzel, roast heirloom beetroot tart and green banana fritters the Gate is far from predictable. All of the ingredients that are used at the restaurant have been selectively sourced from independent producers, following the Gate’s philosophy of celebrating food. This philosophy allows extraordinary experimentation when comes to both the dishes they create and the processes they use.

Delicious veggie dishes aren’t the only thing offer at the Gate, their theme of experimentation continues on to their wide range of cocktails too. From a Jalapeño Margarita to a Lavender Lady t
he Gates cocktail menu does not fail to impress. All made with fresh juices, herbs and botanicals the cocktail menu is another reason why the Gate is bringing innovation and celebration to Central London food scene.

Just hiding off of the shopping hub of Oxford Street, in a small Marylebone suburb, the Gate is a fantastic place to put down your bags and relax for that mid-shop meal. Natural light fills the restaurants minimalistic, tranquil dining space. The gate offers both a healthy and relaxing alternative to the high street chains that are only a walk away.
