Hundreds of staff from the UK’s biggest communications agency, based in Marylebone, go ‘all out’ in the largest relay race this year to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Over 400 employees at AMV BBDO have raised over £27,000 for Brain Tumour Research this September. Staff voted on the selection of the charity inspired by their colleague Tom Thake, an Account Manager, who is recovering from the surgery and treatment for a brain tumour.

AMV BBDO London staff, based in Marylebone, designed a unique and ambitious relay race from John O’Groats back to the AMV head office at 151 Marylebone Road, which took place between the 8th and 13th of September. Participants included cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers, motorcyclists, swimmers and skateboarders – CEO Ian Pearman even hitchhiked from Oxford to Richmond dressed as a woman.

Ian Pearman, CEO of AMV BBDO, said, “This is our second year of choosing a charity of the year and it has been wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm the team have put into planning the relay. Tom of course is the inspiration but the whole agency is backing Brain Tumour Research.”

Sue Farrington Smith, Chief Executive of Brain Tumour Research said,
“Immediately we were struck by the professionalism and energy the team put into their events. People went to great lengths to find ways they could get involved, whether it was joining in with a mammoth cycle ride through Scotland to a more sedentary stroll with dogs through central London. They seemed to have thought of everything and were very clever in how they made this fun and engaging, whilst backing this serious cause.”

Tom, who lives in Brixton, London, was diagnosed with a tennis ball-sized tumour above his right ear after collapsing during a cricket match. After undergoing surgery in September 2012, followed by a challenging course of radiotherapy & chemotherapy, Tom eventually returned to work in January 2013. Determined not to let the tumour dictate his life, and is now back working full-time at the agency.
