Après entered its fourth year in style last week with a third birthday celebration to remember. The Duke Street bar, located just across the street from a Selfridges entrance, has become a regular destination for cocktail and music lovers, with the bar team coming a close second place in the first round of the Babicka Vodka Marylebone Cocktail Competition.
The outside seating area and upstairs bar give Après more of a bar feel, whilst downstairs the venue leans more towards a a club space. Après attracts a young and sophisticated crowd (much like its neighbour Selfridges) and this was certainly reflected in its birthday celebrations.
The night was kicked off buy a duo who go by the name of the Modern Jesters playing a range of covers and mashups, from old to new. The guitar, drum and vocal combination was upbeat, providing both musical and comedy entertainment whilst setting the atmosphere the night ahead. They are playing at Après throughout the summer – definitely worth a watch. They were followed by Fudge and the Frequency, a funk collective played the night away with some catchy tunes (Planet Radio in particular). Fudge on vocals is a true energetic performer and they lived up to their ‘wake the funk up’ tagline!
Après is famous for its cocktails and of course we tried a range from an extensive list. The Negronis and Mojitos are definitely recommended, whilst the Raspberry Mule was crowned our favourite of the evening, offering a cool and refreshing cocktail on a warm(ish) ‘summer’ evening. The mini burgers from the bar food menu are addictive greasy perfection – don’t order them too early in the night or you’ll find it hard to stop.
A great place for after work cocktails or a night out, it is no wonder that Après has cemented itself as one of Marylebone’s top destinations. Happy third birthday!
